Poland threatens to close main Ukraine army assistance hub
Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, Poland has been a major supporter of Ukraine, with the Rzeszow airport—just 80 kilometers from the Ukrainian border—serving as the main entry point for Western military aid. Around 80–90% of NATO and partner equipment, including arms, ammunition, and vehicles, is routed through the facility.
However, Duda expressed anger that Poland has been excluded from key international decision-making processes regarding the aid. Calling the situation a "scandal," he emphasized that Polish infrastructure is national property, not to be used freely by others.
“They act like Rzeszow airport and our highways are theirs. But they’re ours,” Duda said. He suggested that if Poland’s role continues to be disregarded, the government could close the hub “for maintenance” and force Ukraine and its allies to find alternative delivery methods. “Use ships, planes, or drop it by parachute,” he added sarcastically.
Duda also criticized the broader NATO dynamic, arguing that Poland needs to assert itself more forcefully in its dealings with the U.S. and Germany.
Moscow, for its part, has repeatedly condemned Western military aid to Ukraine, saying it only prolongs the conflict and deepens NATO’s involvement.
Duda’s term ends in August, with incoming President Karol Nawrocki set to take office. Nawrocki, a historian and head of the Institute of National Remembrance, has voiced strong opposition to Ukraine joining NATO or the EU, citing security risks and historical grievances related to wartime nationalist figures revered in Ukraine.
Though a meeting between Nawrocki and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is planned, Poland’s next administration is expected to take a more critical approach to bilateral relations and Ukraine’s EU ambitions.
